The Hamptons may not be known for its surfing, but the East End has a prominent surf culture—especially in Montauk. Aside from locals, visitors come from all over and surf at our beautiful beaches. Don’t know where to start? We’ve compiled a list of our top seven ocean beaches for surfing.
We suggest checking the conditions prior to heading to the beach. You can check live cams on Hamptons.com or see the water temps, tides, wind, and swell forecast on Surfline.
Know of any other local beaches that you don’t see here? Drop a line in the comments.
1. Dune Road
Hampton Bays, NY
Anywhere along Dune Road is going to be a good spot for surfing since many of the beaches are relatively quiet and surfers won’t have to worry about bumping into others trying to snag a wave. The issue? Parking. Make sure you know which beaches you can and cannot park at.
2. Ponquogue Beach
Hampton Bays, NY 11946
Also along Dune Road, Ponquogue is a popular ocean beach with decent waves. The good thing about this beach is that, 1. it’s easy to get to, and 2. you can buy a daily parking pass if you’re not here all summer.
3. Shinnecock Inlet
Southampton, NY 11968
Located in between Dune Road and Meadow Lane, this area is a local favorite. To get here, you can park either all the way at the end of Dune Road near the restaurants in Hampton Bays, or drive to the end of Meadow Lane and park at Shinnecock East County Park.
4. Cryder Beach
Southampton, NY 11968
Meadow Lane beaches require parking passes, but sometimes there are free spots near Cryder, which is why we suggest this ocean beach for those who don’t live out here year-round. Plus, it’s easy to get to from Southampton village.
5. Ditch Plains Beach
Montauk, NY 11954
Ditch Plains is the favorite surf spot in the Hamptons, and for good reason. It’s a beautiful beach and has the Ditch Witch nearby for post-surfing grub.
6. Camp Hero State Park
Montauk, NY 11954
Camp Hero’s ocean beaches are located at the bottom of cliff, so we suggest being careful in getting down there—especially with surf boards. But on the weekends, this beach could be significantly less crowded than Ditch.
7. Turtle Cove
Montauk, NY 11954
Before and after a storm, the swells at Turtle Cove can offer ideal surfing conditions.
